Ich habe nach meinem zu Hause gesucht.

Einer der Jobs in meinem Leben war es, Ausländer*innen Deutsch beizubringen. Da alle in den Klasse (außer ich) weit weg von zu Hause waren, hatten wir oft lebhafte Diskussionen über das Thema „Was bedeutet dir Heimat“?
Und so oft ich auch darüber diskutiert habe, es ist nach wie vor nicht einfach für mich, die Frage zu beantworten. Natürlich fühle ich mich unheimlich vertraut mit Berlin, mit der Brandenburger Umgebung und den Mecklenburger Seen, wo ich in meiner Kindheit oft Zelten war.
Doch was treibt einen dazu an, in die Welt aufzubrechen und Neues zu entdecken? Ich denke, es ist der Versuch, die fehlenden Teile von etwas Unvollständigem zu suchen. Das begann für mich mit Wasserwanderungen in der Stille der polnischen Masuren und ging weiter mit einer langen Reise nach Kalifornien, wo ich als Teil der Wege-Crew monatelang Wanderwege durch den Redwood-Nationalpark anlegte. Jeden Tag wanderte ich durch den immensen Säulenwald der höchsten Bäume der Erde, eine Erfahrung, die für immer bleibt und ein Teil von mir wurde.
In den darauffolgenden Jahren verschlug es mich in den Norden und Süden Europas, nach Schweden und Griechenland wo ich auf Farmen arbeitete neue Wurzeln schlug. Als ich in Spanien die Camino Pilgerrouten und damit das Langwandern für mich entdeckte, fand ich ein zu Hause im Unterwegssein, das mich bis heute nicht mehr losgelassen hat.
Während all dieser Jahre habe ich Songs über meine Erlebnisse geschrieben, wohl als Versuch, etwas in Worte und Melodien zu fassen, was sich sonst so ungemein schwer ausdrücken lässt. Das zu Hause an all den Orten, die mich vervollständigt haben.
Eins meiner vielen „zu Hauses“ ist ein kleines Dorf in der Lausitz, unweit von Bautzen, wo mein Großvater lebte. Ich habe ihm den Song „Church Bells“ gewidmet und dieses Video in seinem Dorf gedreht. (Auf Youtube kannst du dazu deutsche Untertitel aktivieren.)

Finding my home.
One of the jobs in my life was teaching German to foreigners. Since everyone in the class (except me) was far from home, we often had lively discussions on the subject of “What does home mean to you”?
And as often as I've discussed it, it's still not easy for me to answer the question. Of course I feel incredibly familiar with Berlin, with the Brandenburg sourroundings and the Mecklenburg lakes, where I often went camping in my childhood.
But what drives you to set out into the world and discover new places, things and people? I think it's an attempt to find the missing parts of something incomplete. For me it all started with weeks long kayaking trips in the silence of Polish Masuria and went on with a long trip to Northern California, where for months as part of the trail crew I built and repaired hiking trails through the Redwood National Park. Every day I wandered through the immense columnar forest of the tallest trees on earth, an experience that will stay with me forever and became a part of me.
In the following years I moved to the north and south of Europe, to Sweden and Greece, where I worked on farms and put down new roots. When I discovered the Caminos de Santiago and long distance hiking in Spain, I found a home in being on the move that has never let go of me to this day.
During all those years I have written songs about my experiences, probably as an attempt to put into words and melodies something that is otherwise extremely difficult to express. Being at home in all the places that made me complete.
One of my many “homes” is a small village in the Lausitz region, not far from the town of Bautzen, where my grandfather lived. I dedicated the song "Church Bells" to him and shot this video in his village.
